But history is cruel. After Attila's shocking death on their wedding night, Ildico is left alone. Ernak is recovering, and Ildico tries to earn their keep, helping with foraging and mending. Though she works hard, she feels the villagers' mistrust in their averted eyes and hushed conversations. The uneasy peace is shattered when a hunting party returns. Their leader confronts the Matriarch in a tense, dialogue-heavy scene, reporting they saw a Roman patrol nearby, asking about a 'traitor queen with the Hun's spawn.' Panic ripples through the community. The Matriarch summons Ildico. Her tone is not unkind, but firm: 'The child is an omen, but your pursuers are a certainty. You have brought the serpent's shadow to our door. You cannot stay.' The episode ends on Ildico's face, her brief hope extinguished, replaced by grim resolve as she understands her sanctuary is lost.
