On the brink of collapse from exhaustion and despair, Ildico struggles through a deep forest with a feverish Ernak. Inner monologue reveals her fear that she has failed him. Just as she falters, she discovers a hidden village of outcasts. The villagers are immediately hostile, surrounding her with suspicion. She is brought before their leader, the Healer Matriarch, a stern and ancient woman. Ildico, voice cracking, begs for sanctuary and medicine for her son. The Matriarch examines the child, her expression unreadable. She is about to turn them away when her eyes fix on Ernak. Narration: 'She saw not a child, but a sign.' The Matriarch agrees to help, but her words are cryptic, warning Ildico that their help comes with a price and their peace is easily broken.
