He is a dreamer at heart, earnest and trusting to a fault, which blinds him to the dangers lurking beneath the surface of 'Ascend'.
Having bounced between several failed tech ideas, Carl feels immense pressure to finally succeed and prove his worth. He sees the 'Ascend' conference as his last big shot at making a mark on the world and gaining the respect he's always wanted. This desperation makes him the perfect candidate for the cult, which preys on innovators who are hungry for a breakthrough.
