Barnaby is a cynic, his hope eroded by his time in captivity. He is gruff, sarcastic, and world-weary on the surface. Beneath his prickly exterior, however, he is intelligent, a shrewd planner, and fiercely protective of the few he calls friends. His friendship with Pip and Wally reawakens his longing for his Arctic home and his will to fight for it.
Captured from his solitary life in the Arctic, Barnaby was resigned to a life behind glass in the Boston aquarium. He viewed the world with distrust until the arrival of the determined young penguin, Pip. He became the strategist of the escape, channeling his intellect towards the singular goal of feeling the northern ice under his paws again.
